This is the first tutorial as part of the Visual Basic .NET 2005 Training. In this tutorials we will be learning about the basics of The .NET Framework Architecture, The .NET vision, Common Language Runtime (CLR), .NET Framework Class Library and Microsoft Intermediate Language (MSIL). It's very important to learn the basics before we actually start with the Programming. The .NET framework is a software technology that is directed towards connecting information, people, systems and devices seamlessly. The high level of software integration that has been attempted through use of XML web services enables the creation of small, discrete, building block types of applications. These applications are connected to other applications over the Internet.

Design patterns represent common software problems and the solutions to those problems in a formal manner. They were inspired by a book written by architect Christopher Alexander. Patterns were introduced in the software world by another book: "Design Patterns: Elements of Reusable Object-Oriented Software", by Erich Gamma, Richard Helm, Ralph Johnson, and John Vlissides. These people were nicknamed the "Gang of Four" for some mysterious reason. The Gang of Four describes 23 design patterns. With patterns you don't have to reinvent the wheel and get proven solutions for frequently encountered problems. Many books and articles have been written on this subject. This means that design patterns are becoming common knowledge, which leads to better communication. To summarize design patterns save time, energy while making your life easier.

Web applications lack the rich user interface provided by Desktop applications. They tend to be less responsive compared to Desktop products. Web applications employ inherit request/response cycle to build pages which in turn creates less natural and not so dynamic/responsive pages. It was always been a challenge for web developer to built slick, rich and dynamic web applications. We can feel lag... But it's no more now.

Multithreading is a technique that can be used to perform time consuming tasks in a separate additional thread other than the main application thread.

When you, for example, have a time-consuming function, you may need to call this function as a response of a button click. Now, instead of freezing all your application waiting for this function to return / to finish, you can create a new thread and assign this function to. When you do this, your application interface will not be blocked and you can use it to perform other tasks. At the same time, your time-consuming task is being carried out in the background.
