You have reached the home of ASP-Tango the easiest ASP template engine ever. Here you will find the latest news, information, examples and eventually a discussion forum. Although ASP-Tango has not been officially released beyond the current beta code you can still see it in action right here.
The content management system running this website is is fully templated using ASP-Tango. Templating (also known as "skinning") is the process of separating business rules and logic from presentation. In less technical terms it means that ASP pages enforce business rules, retrieves and prepares data for output to the user after which the template engine formats the data using one or more HTML templates for output to the client.
Templating is beneficial because it allows the presentation developer and the business rules developer the flexibility to work independently - both before and after the site goes live. This means that the ASP developer can write script code without having to know exactly how the content is going to be presented - that is - his ASP pages are no longer terminated by an unmanageable tangle of ASP escape codes and HTML content tags.
In most template engines it is the ASP code that drives the entire process: security, business rules, and code to evaluate the template properly. In this model the ASP code is tightly bound to the template it is evaluating. Changing the layout of the template often requires a corresponding change in ASP code logic. ASP-Tango was designed from the ground up to be different.
In the ASP-Tango approach the ASP code performs security, business logic, and provides an interface to the data to be displayed. After invoking the template engine it is the template engine that manages the layout process - performing substitutions, inclusion and exclusion of data, and iteration over content as required by the template, making callbacks to the hosting ASP code.
