In some recent work I needed to have databases created with a back end application. Once the database was created from this online application it was pre filled with tables and data from another script that ran right after the database was made. To create a database with PHP we first need to connect as a user that has the ability to create new databases. Note that we are not connecting to a database but we are connecting to MySQL as a user.

The regular expression, as a pattern, can match all kinds of text strings helping your application validate, compare, compute, decide etc. It can do simple or very complex string manipulations. The list of possibilities is enormous when it comes to what you can achieve using regular expressions. You can take any phrase that starts with an "A" or any character and do various things with it. You can match phone numbers, email addresses, url's, credit card numbers, social security numbers, zip codes, states, cities.....(the list never ends). A huge script that is supposed to validate a user input and prepare it for sql can be reduced to only one line with the help of preg_replace.

In this article, I will explain how it is possible to connect and query an MS SQL server (running under a Windows operating system) from php installed on a unix box. The same problem, in the case of php installed under Windows is not covered here because it is well explained in php FAQ; sadly I cannot say the same thing for the unix case. In fact, there is a multitude of incorrect or outdated sources of information which will cause new people trying to solve this problem to drop it after some bad tries.
