NHibernate is ORM solution and is intended for transparent binding .NET classes to database tables. NHibernate was designed to reduce time efforts to switch application to another database provider. There are a lot of libraries out there and, invariably, they do a lot of things that you don't need or in a manner that you don't like. Thus, they feel bloated. One example would be Prototype.
