Modern widget engines (Apple Dashboard, Yahoo!Widgets, Windows Vista Sidebar) use XML transport (AJAX) to constantly update various information(like weather, stocks, etc) from web. In this article there is a source of trivial php web-counter which collects stats and outputs number of page views(hits) and visitors(in fact, unique hosts) since midnight as XML file. There is also our special AeCounter Dashboard Widget (and it's sources) which receive these xml-statistics (with the help of XmlHttpRequest object) and displays numbers on a little nice panel.

Second significant thing that should be noticed is category structure. We keep classic category structure for site navigation, i.e. category with subcategories with sub... but in URLs there are no second, third or any further level categories. All categories in URLs look like first level ones. Here the point were some webmasters name us as heretics and run away, horrified by this case. As for us - we are proud of this feature. It is breaking the rule but has important property. Main advantage of such approach is that every section looks like first level category for search engines. It means simple directory structure, simple URLs, easy caching, fast optimization and indexing by search engines.

However it seems this function was quite often requested so PHP has a built in realistion of this issue sinc PHP 3. So all you need to know to call the PHP built in function get_meta_tags().

If you are Classic ASP programmer or PHP programmer, you probably use SSI include files quite a lot on your web applications and you probably also know that this has worked quite reasonably well for all of you. But the major disadvantages would be maintaining the code once your web projects has grow bigger. Major problem would be to keep up with the HTML opening and closing tags. Its quite hard to debug the code if you are adding some HTML files in your include files and then later on you find that it produce funny result on certain page.
