By submitting a Sitemap file to google, you can take control of the first part of the crawling/indexing processes. A Sitemap provides an additional view into your site and it helps speed up the discovery of your pages, which is an important first step in crawling and indexing your pages.
The location of a Sitemap file determines the set of URL's that can be included in that Sitemap. The best place to put your Sitemap is http://www.sitename.com/sitemap.xml. A Sitemap file located at http://www.sitename.com/images/sitemap.xml can include only URL's starting with http://www.yoursitename.com/images/.
