Dynamic dropdown lists with ASP
2534 Dynamic dropdown lists with ASP http://www.designplace.org/tutorials.php?page=1&c_id=26 Dropdown lists in HTML are very useful for multiple-option choices, especially within a web form that user needs to fill out.

Producing them dynamically from a database can saves a lot of time and energy.

In this example, we will use ASP 3.0 to generate dynamic dropdown lists from a Microsoft Access database. The database table in question contains fruit and vegetable types.

My purpose of this example is to show how to get records from an html form and submit that form to an ASP page. This ASP page will then use SQL to enter the records into the database When I started doing ASP, getting records from an ASP page to a database was my 1st thing I wanted to do. I quickly discovered there was a few ways you could do that. This example uses formatted SQL and the Execute method of the Connection object to take data from a html form and submit to an ASP page that processes the data using SQL.

We can use several providers to open DBF files usind ADODB. Basic way is to use ODBC data source (DSN or DSNless), there is several samples published on web. But how to open DBF files without ODBC? There are two other OLEDB providers, using which you can work with DBF files. One of them is Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.
Key property to work with DBF files is "Extended Properties" - there is no much info about this parameter in documentation. This parameter has similar meaning as connect parameter in DAO OpenDatabase method. First work is to open connection to DBASE IV files:

Database programming is like a confused little monkey. Puddlin? on the floor and screaming at the walls, it?s a tedious little thing that?s prone to memory leaks and lots of errors and mistakes. To the dismay of anyone hoping to avoid a headache, database programming is ridiculously redundant and incredibly boring. Because web development loves its little monkey sooooo much, it?s unfortunately here to stay.

Many a time, you are confronted with creating a system DSN for use with ASP. If you have an ISP account, this might take time and more than sometimes - money. This article describes how to use File DSNs and save time and money. Also, you can reuse these DSNs and thus, with some modifications, use the same DSN for as many database connections.
