However since then I've found a new tool which with a little work I have been able to coax into downloading the contact list in gmail.
libgmailer is a far more powerful tool than I need for simply grabbing the contact list, allowing emails to be read and sent, attachments to be handled and a whole bunch of other things. If you want the full list I suggest you visit their website.
