A captcha is a 'Completely automated public Turing test to tell computers and humans apart', these are used on web site forms to help prevent a 'bot' from using your form. It can basically be a small dynamically created image that is used on a form, the form user has to enter the text shown on the image when submitting the form, so the script knows there is a good chance that the form has been submitted by a human.
