14983PHP for the World Wide Webhttp://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0201727870/PHP is very similar to other languages and my programming background made learning PHP much easier. However, this book's approach and working examples should serve as an excellent tutorial for beginners as well as programmers. Keep in mind that the book is designed to give you a working knowledge of the language and is not a comprehensive course on PHP programming. After reading the book, however, you will be in a much better position to continue your PHP education through PHP's homepage (PHP.net), learning additional functions and techniques as your projects dictate (and as the PHP language continues to grow).PHP > BooksOct 12, 2006Peachpit
Joomla! is the world's hottest open-source content management system, and the winner of the 2006 Open Source CMS Prize. Out of the box, Joomla! does a great job of managing the content needed to make your website sing. But for many people, the true power of Joomla! lies in its application framework that makes it possible for thousands of developers around the world to create powerful add-ons and extensions. Many companies or organizations have requirements that go beyond what is available in the basic Joomla! package or in a freely available extension. Thankfully, Joomla! offers a powerful application framework that makes it easy for developers to create sophisticated add-ons that extend the power of Joomla! into virtually unlimited directions.
PHP is far more than a cult language or open-source icon. It's a remarkably capable language that's well integrated with lots of technologies--notably mSQL and MySQL database servers--and quite easy to learn. Programming PHP helps you up the PHP learning curve, very nearly guaranteeing that you'll find in its pages an example that illustrates every fundamental aspect of the language and its most important extension modules. Plus, there's some cool advanced stuff, like recipes for manipulating images, working with Extensible Markup Language (XML) content, and generating Adobe Acrobat (PDF) files. Rasmus Lerdorf invented PHP and quarterbacks its ongoing evolution, so there's little question of the content's authority.
You don't need prior knowledge of programming, as this book provides you with everything you need to know about PHP, MySQL and how to create dynamic webpages. You learn by example from the many practical examples throughout the book. You will be taught how to create simple web pages first, and then gradually build up to using forms. PHP is the scripting language of choice for Linux server--even if you haven't got a web server installed, don't worry. The first chapter of this book covers what to install and configure in an easy to understand way. And all the software you need is on the accompanying CD-Rom, which includes apache, Netscape, PHP, and MySQL source code, plus all the scripts from the book.
