In lesson 17 I showed you have you created an Access database and how you could connect to it with ASP through ODBC using a DSN file. You need to have full access to the server to create the DSN file, something that can be difficult if your site is hosted somewhere. In this lesson I will teach you how to make a DSN-less connection. And as tests has shown, an DSN-less connection to Access gives you better performance! You can have up to 20-30 simultaneous users on the db without problems. A regular DSN connection would not handle this kind of load. (This is not the case for MS SQL Server). Check out this great Power ASP article to learn more.

Active Server Pages allow us an easy means of querying and updating a database from a webpage. This article describes the basics of using this technique in a nutshell. The examples given here utilize a Microsoft Access database, but the principles elucidated apply equally well to ASP integration with other databaes. (Access has been selected because it is widely familiar, easy to use, and adequate for many small to medium-sized projects.)

Many a time, you are confronted with creating a system DSN for use with ASP. If you have an ISP account, this might take time and more than sometimes - money. This article describes how to use File DSNs and save time and money. Also, you can reuse these DSNs and thus, with some modifications, use the same DSN for as many database connections.

Displaying specific subsets of data from a database is easy to accomplish in .asp. The following example utilizes our Access database of Mark "The Bird" Fidrych and displays all of his season statistics for 1976 contained in the database rather than displaying the entire db.

Learn how to select a record from database. First we need to calculate how many records we have in our table. Using randomize function, we generate a random number between 0 to count of records in database.
